Smothered in Grace: From Bear Attacks to Bold Conversations at Back to the 50s

June 25, 20253 min read

Hey, it’s Ronai!

This week was one for the books—and not just because I got to yell at a bear from my deck in the middle of the night (yes, really).

From wildlife drama to vintage dresses, divine appointments, and everything in between, I’ve never felt more smothered in grace… and I mean that in the best possible way.

The Night a Bear Broke into My Chicken Coop

It all started Monday night. We spotted a mama bear and her three cubs across the street. At first, we were snapping pictures, thinking how cool! But cool quickly turned into chaos.

Around midnight, our dogs started barking. My husband checked our Ring camera, and within minutes, we realized the bear had climbed into our insulated chicken coop through a propped-open window.

If you’ve never heard a chicken scream, trust me—you don’t want to.

By the time my husband started yelling to scare the bear off, it had already killed two of our birds. But miraculously, the rest were unharmed. Twenty-six Laying hens—Seven 3-month old and 14 babies just a few weeks old—were spared.

Later, we learned our daughter had said a prayer for us right at that moment.

Coincidence? Nope. Prayer works.
And God's timing is always exact.

From Chickens to Classic Cars

Fast forward to the weekend, and I was at the Back to the 50s Ladies Showcase at the State Fairgrounds. Dressed in my full pinup gear with two of my favorite people, Kyle and LeeAnn, I was there to share essential oils and health tools—but ended up sharing so much more.

Back to the 50s

Like conversations about faith.
Moments of unexpected kindness.
And even praying over strangers in the booth.

One woman walked by in pain, and I offered her a chair and a few layers of essential oils. Her response?
"Are they supposed to be working already?"
Yes, ma’am. They are.

Another young man had a tattoo of the three nails crossed. I told him I loved it. That one comment opened up a powerful gospel conversation—right there at my booth. He even asked if I would pray for him… and I did.

There’s just something about obedience—when you listen to that nudge from God, He shows up.

Unexpected Blessings, Big & Small

We had a double-sized booth thanks to a neighboring vendor who packed up early, and that gave us room to welcome people in. Literally—chairs were out, and people came in to rest, chat, and connect.

Someone even anonymously bought each of us something from a local boutique because our presence “made their day.”
I mean—smothered in grace from known and unknown sources. That’s the kind of kindness I want more of in the world.

And the best part? The moments of quiet in between busy waves were often the exact moments God used for conversations that really mattered. I even got to share the Brilliant+ app with several people—it’s been life-changing for me.

We talked about so much more—like Shannon’s super hot graduation weekend (hello, 110° heat index), the power of thankful prayer, and how post-2020 peopling is… well, a bit feral.
