I Get To… I Don’t Have To The Shift That Changes Everything
The Shift That Changes Everything
Hey, it’s Ronai!
Have you ever noticed how heavy the words “I have to” feel?
I have to go to work.
I have to lead this meeting.
I have to take care of these people.
I have to fix this.
I have to keep everyone happy.
It sounds small, but those three words can quietly drain the joy right out of something God actually designed you to do.
The original I Get To / I Don’t Have To framework was created by my friend and mentor Eddie Villa through Unleash Your Strengths. His teaching shifted how I saw my CliftonStrengths and how I showed up in my own life.
As I leaned into that work, I felt inspired to build a faith-centered version that aligns with how God wired us and how He partners with our strengths. That’s how my Faithfully Unleashed lens was born.
And no, this isn’t positive thinking.
It’s perspective alignment.
The Difference Between Pressure and Partnership
When we live from “I have to,” we often operate from pressure.
Pressure to perform.
Pressure to prove.
Pressure to control.
Pressure to carry things God never assigned us.
But when we shift to “I get to,” something changes.
It becomes partnership.
“I get to” reminds us:
This is a calling, not a burden.
This is stewardship, not striving.
This is alignment, not hustle.
And just as important, “I don’t have to” frees us from carrying what was never ours in the first place.
You don’t have to:
Prove your worth.
Fix everything.
Convince everyone.
Be everything to everybody.
That alone is worth taking a deep breath over.
What This Has to Do with Your Strengths
Here’s where it gets powerful.
Your CliftonStrengths are not random talents. They are patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that show up naturally in you.
But strengths under pressure can turn into overuse.
For example:
If you lead with Achiever, you might think,
“I have to keep producing.”
If you lead with Responsibility, you might think,
“I have to carry it all.”
If you lead with Empathy, you might think,
“I have to feel everything.”
If you lead with Strategic, you might think,
“I have to figure out every possible outcome.”
See how quickly a gift can turn into a weight?
The “I Get To / I Don’t Have To” lens helps you separate:
What God designed you to carry
What you picked up out of fear, comparison, or pressure
It helps you see your strengths through faith, not force.
Strengths Are Meant to Flow, Not Strain

In the Faithfully Unleashed version of the handout, each strength has two sides:
An I Get To
And I Don’t Have To
Because every strength has freedom built into it.
You get to:
Move in faith.
Speak with courage.
Build relationships.
Bring order.
Think deeply.
Create.
Encourage.
Restore.
But you don’t have to:
Over-function.
Over-control.
Over-produce.
Over-explain.
Over-give.
Overthink.
That’s the difference between alignment and exhaustion.
Why This Perspective Matters So Much
When you understand your strengths without a faith lens, you may use them well.
When you understand your strengths with a faith lens, you use them in peace.
Peace changes everything.
It changes how you show up in your marriage.
It changes how you lead.
It changes how you parent.
It changes how you run your business.
It changes how you rest.
Instead of striving to prove yourself, you partner with God.
Instead of carrying everything, you discern what’s actually yours.
Instead of asking, “How do I do more?”
You begin asking, “What has God actually assigned me?”
That question alone can transform your life.
The Real Freedom
The most beautiful part of this framework is that it helps you trust.
Trust your wiring.
Trust your assignments.
Trust your limits.
Trust God’s timing.
And when you trust, your strengths stop feeling like something you manage…
and start feeling like something you steward.
That’s the shift.
Not hustle.
Not performance.
Not pretending you’re limitless.
But living faithfully inside the way you were designed.
If you’ve ever felt tired from being “strong,”
If you’ve ever felt like your strengths sometimes overwhelm you,
If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re doing too much or not enough…
This lens might be exactly what your heart has been needing.
Because you don’t have to carry everything.
But you absolutely get to walk faithfully in what God uniquely designed you to do.
And that changes everything.
If this resonated with you, and you’re ready to stop striving and start stewarding your strengths with God, I would love to walk through this with you.
When you schedule a coaching session with me, I will gift you the full Faithfully Unleashed I Get To / I Don’t Have To PDF as a thank you.
We’ll personalize it to your top strengths and help you clearly see what you get to carry and what you can finally release.
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
You get to grow with clarity, confidence, and peace.

Ronai
