Hey, it’s Ronai!
Can you believe the candy industry profits an average of $1.4 BILLION during Christmas in the US alone? That’s a lot of sweets making their way into stockings, candy bowls, and holiday desserts.
It’s no surprise that during the holidays, many of us indulge in sugary treats. But have you ever stopped to wonder how this sugar overload impacts your body—especially your immune system? Let’s dive into it.
Beth Schupanitz, Nutrition Response Testing Practitioner and Registered Nutrition Consultant from Inspiringhealthsolutions.com has created 13 amazing tips to support your Holiday eating. Her How to Eat Your Way Through the Holidays e-book also includes some amazing recipes.

The Sugary Truth About Your Immune System
While a festive cookie or a slice of pie is certainly part of the holiday magic, excessive sugar consumption can actually take a toll on your immune health:
Weakened White Blood Cells: Sugar can suppress the effectiveness of white blood cells—your body’s infection fighters. This means your immune system has a harder time combating bacteria and viruses, making you more vulnerable to colds, flu, and other illnesses.
Increased Inflammation: High sugar intake triggers inflammation in the body, and chronic inflammation can weaken your immune system over time. Add those sugary drinks and desserts to the mix, and it’s easy to see how the holiday sugar rush can pile on the stress.
Gut Disruption: Your gut microbiome is a cornerstone of your immune system. Excess sugar throws off the balance of good bacteria, which can affect your body’s ability to fight infections.
And here’s the kicker—it’s not just your immune system that’s affected, especially when it comes to kids!
Beyond sugar, many popular candies and baked goods contain ingredients that are downright alarming:
Titanium Dioxide: Used to enhance colors in products, this ingredient has been linked to DNA damage and cancer. It’s banned in Europe, but shockingly, still allowed in the US and Canada.
Red #3 and Other Artificial Dyes: These dyes are often linked to hyperactivity in kids and other health concerns.
TBHQ & BHT: Preservatives like TBHQ harm the immune system, and BHT has been linked to cancer.
The good news? There are better options.
I’m all about balance during the holidays—enjoying a treat or two without loading up on GMOs, artificial flavors, and harmful additives. In the picture (), you’ll see some of my favorite candy swaps. They’re free of:
GMOs
Artificial dyes (like Red #3)
Corn syrup
Artificial flavors
Should-be-banned ingredients like TBHQ and BHT
These swaps let you indulge while avoiding the worst offenders.
Even with healthier treats, I choose to detox myself and my family every day to keep us protected from harmful toxins. One of my go-to detox tools is zeolite clinoptilolite, which helps remove toxins from the body and supports overall health.
Sugar itself isn’t the villain—it’s the overconsumption and harmful additives that cause trouble. So go ahead, enjoy a holiday treat mindfully. But if you’re looking to level up your candy game and health routine, I’ve got you covered.
