Hey, it’s Ronai!
I’m back with another exciting blog post, and this one’s close to my heart for a couple of reasons. First off, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness and show support to the strong women (and men!) battling this disease. And second, let’s talk about keeping the other “girls” in my life happy—my chickens!
Fun Activities for Happy Hens
Just like us, our chickens need variety to stay healthy and happy! Here are a few of my favorite ways to keep my girls entertained and content:
Chicken Swings and Perches: Chickens love to perch, and a swing adds an extra element of fun. They’ll hop on, sway back and forth, and enjoy the view from a higher spot.
Treat Balls or Foraging Toys: Keep their minds sharp by filling a ball with their favorite treats. It keeps them busy pecking and rolling the ball around to get the goodies out.
Dust Bath Area: Create a designated dust bath zone. Chickens love to roll around in the dirt, and it helps them stay clean and free from pests. Add some herbs like lavender (just for them!) to make it extra special.
Obstacle Courses: You can build a simple obstacle course with logs, bricks, or old tires. Chickens love to explore, and it’s great exercise!
Fresh Veggies and Herbs: Hang some veggies like cabbage or kale just out of reach. It keeps them moving and gives them a nutritious snack. I also toss in fresh herbs like mint, basil, and oregano, which are great for their health.
Tying it Back to Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Now, let’s shift gears for a moment. While I keep my hens busy, this month I’m also focusing on keeping myself healthy and mindful. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that self-care is vital. Whether it's scheduling that long-overdue mammogram, eating nutrient-rich foods, or staying active, it's important to prioritize our health.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here are a few ways we can take action:
Schedule Your Checkup: Early detection saves lives. Make sure you’re up to date with your screenings!
Support a Cause: Whether it's donating to breast cancer research or attending a local fundraiser, every bit helps.
Self-Care Routine: Just like we keep the girls busy with fun activities, let’s make sure we’re nourishing our bodies and souls with good food, mindfulness, and movement.
Final Thoughts
Keeping my girls busy with fun activities is essential to their well-being, just like staying proactive with our health is essential to ours. Let’s celebrate this month by taking care of ourselves, supporting those affected by breast cancer, and—of course—keeping the hens happy!
Until next time, stay well and keep spreading joy!
